Curriculum - Charlie Check-First Unit
Safety Person, Safety House

Safety Check-Point:
If you cannot Check First, you may use a Safety Person or a Safety House.

Basic Information:

  • Give your child the name of two Safety Persons and a Safety House. These are people you trust!
  • Your child does not need to Check First before taking a ride, accepting candy or money, opening the door when home alone, etc. if it is a Safety Person.
  • Children older than third grade may be given names of three persons or even a Code Word. Caution them not to get closer than two arm lengths away from the person to hear the code word!
  • A Safety House is someplace safe they can go if they need help. It does not need to be the house where the Safety Person lives.
  • Prepare your child to use a Safety Person or Safety House before a situation arises.
  • This is the only exception to the Check First rule for younger children! Older children should evaluate the entire situation and may need to rely upon a “gut” or intuitive feeling if the Check First rule is not applicable.
